Some of you reading this are from NYC, or are reading from there right now so forgive me if I've misrepresented something. I just came back from my week’s stay in Manhattan and got a nice superficial look at the city’s bike culture.
It was nice to see the level of use that the bikes get around here. You’d be hard pressed to find a parked bike with glistening paint and clean components. But it is as they should be, well used.
This is something rather common in NYC. These bikes are wrapped with plastic all around the frame for protection! I've seen duct taped bikes in LB and LA but not this, and surely not so common.
We need to see more of this in LA and OC. People using road bikes to commute. Stop using those Wal-Mart dual suspension mountain bikes! you’re wasting your time and energy!

Street carts, perfect fuel for the daily city ride. And so cheap and tastyyy.
Sadly sometimes even a fat-ass NYC chain lock or a U-Lock wont save you. Vandalism and theft are rampant here. During my stay I witnessed on two occasions guys riding home without seat posts.
